Sonepur Mela is one of the largest and oldest fairs in Asia, held every year at Sonepur in Bihar near the confluence of the Ganga and Gandak rivers. The fair begins on Kartik Purnima and attracts visitors, traders, and pilgrims from across India and abroad. Traditionally known as a cattle fair, it is famous for the trading of elephants, horses, cattle, and other animals. Along with animal trading, the mela features cultural programs, folk performances, circuses, and local handicrafts. The nearby Harihar Nath Temple adds strong religious significance to the event. Pilgrims take holy dips at the river confluence during the mela period. The fair reflects a vibrant blend of rural economy, culture, and tradition. Sonepur Mela continues to be a unique symbol of Bihar’s heritage and social life.
