The Ruins of Nalanda Mahavihara are the remains of one of the world’s oldest and most influential residential universities, located in Nalanda district of Bihar. Nalanda flourished from the 5th to the 12th century and was a major center of learning supported by Gupta and Pala rulers. Scholars from India, China, Tibet, Korea, and Southeast Asia came here to study Buddhism, philosophy, medicine, mathematics, logic, and astronomy. The ruins reveal a well-planned campus with monasteries, temples, classrooms, hostels, and stupas arranged in an orderly layout. Advanced architecture and urban planning reflect the high intellectual standards of the institution. Nalanda played a crucial role in spreading Buddhism across Asia. The site is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its global historical value. Today, the ruins stand as a powerful symbol of ancient India’s educational and cultural excellence.
