43The Badrinath Temple, one of the holiest temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is situated at an altitude of 3,133 meters on the banks of the Alaknanda River. According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated here in deep penance, and Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to provide him shade. The temple was re-established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and remains a vital part of the Char Dham Yatra and the Panch Badri pilgrimage circuit.
