Shri Jagannatha Swami Temple, commonly known as the Jagannath Temple, is a revered Hindu temple located in Puri, Odisha, India. Dedicated to Lord Jagannatha, a form of Lord Vishnu, the temple is one of the four sacred Char Dham pilgrimage sites, making it an important spiritual destination for Hindus across the world. Built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, the temple is an architectural masterpiece of the Kalinga style, featuring towering spires, intricately carved stone walls, and a majestic sanctum crowned by the 65-meter-high Shikhar (spire). The main deities worshipped here are Lord Jagannatha, his elder brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra, all carved from sacred neem wood and uniquely adorned. The temple is renowned for its grand annual Rath Yatra (Chariot Festival), during which the deities are ceremoniously placed on massive, elaborately decorated chariots and pulled through the streets by thousands of devotees. This festival attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists from around the world. Apart from its religious significance, the Jagannatha Temple is also known for its intriguing rituals, mysterious architectural features (like the flag that always flutters against the wind), and the temple kitchen, considered the largest in the world, where thousands of devotees are served Mahaprasad daily. The temple stands as a symbol of Odisha's rich cultural heritage and deep spiritual traditions.
