Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the lush Western Ghats of Kerala, is one of the most beautiful and biodiverse forest reserves in South India. Spread across 344 square kilometers, this sanctuary is home to majestic elephants, spotted deer, bison, tigers, leopards, and over 200 species of birds and reptiles. The sanctuary is divided into four ranges — Muthanga, Tholpetty, Kurichiat, and Sulthan Bathery — each offering a unique wildlife experience through jeep safaris and guided forest treks. Surrounded by the Nagarhole and Bandipur reserves in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized region of immense ecological importance. The sanctuary is open to visitors from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, allowing tourists to explore the forest during the best wildlife-spotting hours. Entry tickets cost around ₹20 for Indian adults, ₹10 for children, and ₹110 for foreign tourists. Additional charges apply for jeep safaris (₹300–₹600 per person), still cameras (₹25), and video cameras (₹150). Visitors are advised to book safaris early, as the number of vehicles allowed per day is limited to protect the ecosystem. A visit to Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary offers an unforgettable glimpse into Kerala’s natural beauty and biodiversity. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, a wildlife photographer, or simply a nature lover, this sanctuary promises a thrilling and peaceful escape amidst dense forests, chirping birds, and the enchanting sounds of the wild.
