Vikramshila Ruins are the remains of the ancient Vikramshila Mahavihara, located near Bhagalpur in Bihar along the banks of the Ganga River. It was one of the most important Buddhist centers of learning between the 8th and 12th centuries. The university was established by Pala ruler Dharmapala to promote higher studies in Buddhism, philosophy, logic, and tantra. Vikramshila was known for its strict academic discipline and renowned scholars. The ruins include monasteries, temples, meditation halls, and a large central stupa arranged in a planned layout. It played a key role in the spread of Buddhism to Tibet and other parts of Asia. Archaeological excavations have revealed sculptures, inscriptions, and structural remains. Vikramshila Ruins continue to reflect the intellectual and spiritual legacy of ancient India.
