Patharughat is a historic village and memorial site in the Darrang district of Assam, located roughly 60 km northeast of Guwahati (or about 20 km from Mangaldai), on the north bank of the Brahmaputra. Patharughat is famous for the tragic peasant uprising of 28 January 1894, when unarmed farmers protesting exorbitant British land-tax hikes were fired upon — historically referred to as the Patharughat Peasant Uprising. Today, a solemn monument stands at the site — the Patharughat Martyrs’ Column (also called Swaheed Minar) — erected by the Indian Army in 2001 in collaboration with civil authorities. Each year on 28 January (observed as Krishak Swahid Divas / Farmer Martyrs Day), locals and visitors gather to honour the sacrifice of the martyrs. Surrounded by serene rural landscapes and lush fields, Patharughat Memorials offers both deep historical significance and a peaceful environment — making it a poignant destination for those interested in Assam’s freedom-movement history and agrarian heritage.
