Kurkihar is an ancient village and archaeological site located in the Gaya district of Bihar. It is historically important as a major center of Buddhist art and culture between the 7th and 12th centuries. Kurkihar is famous for the discovery of numerous bronze and stone sculptures of Buddha and Buddhist deities, many of which are now preserved in museums in India and abroad. The site flourished under the Pala dynasty, which strongly supported Buddhism and art. Archaeological findings indicate the presence of monasteries and workshops where sculptures were crafted. Kurkihar played a key role in the spread of Buddhist art to regions like Tibet and Southeast Asia. The village today retains a quiet rural character surrounded by fields and natural landscapes. Kurkihar continues to be an important site for understanding Bihar’s rich Buddhist and artistic heritage.
