The Ajanta Caves, located in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra, India, are a remarkable complex of rock-cut Buddhist cave monuments that date back to the 2nd century BCE to the 6th century CE. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the caves are renowned for their exquisite murals, frescoes, and intricate sculptures, which represent the pinnacle of ancient Indian art and architecture.
Carved into a horseshoe-shaped cliff overlooking the Waghora River, the Ajanta Caves comprise 30 caves, including chaitya-grihas (prayer halls) and viharas (monastic residences). These caves were used by Buddhist monks for meditation, study, and living, and they beautifully depict the life of the Buddha, along with scenes from Jataka tales that illustrate moral lessons through stories of Buddha’s previous incarnations.
