Train Street

Place to visit in Train Street

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, Hanoi Train Street is a narrow lane where trains rumble just inches from homes and cafés. Built during French colonial rule in 1902, this track remains active today, with multiple daily passes along Điện Biên Phủ, Phùng Hưng, Lê Duẩn, and Trần Phú Streets .

🕒 Opening & Closing Hours

  • Open daily from early morning (≈ 7 AM) until around 11 PM

  • Trains run several times a day, with most predictable and visually dramatic passes:

    • Afternoon: ~3:00–3:30 PM

    • Evening: ~7:00–7:30 PM

  • Additional trains may operate between 7 AM and 11 PM—attend early or late to catch multiple passes .

💰 Entry Fee

  • There is no official entrance fee. Access is free.

  • However, to enter the street safely, you must sit in a café along the tracks and purchase at least one drink (e.g. water ~20,000 VND / 0.80 USD; egg coffee ~50,000 VND / 2 USD; other drinks ~40,000‑90,000 VND) .

📝 How It Works (Visitor Flow)

  1. At the rail crossing on Phùng Hưng or Trần Phú, you’ll see barriers and guards—cafés invite visitors in.

  2. You're escorted to a café, sit down, order a drink, and only then allowed onto the tracks area .

  3. Cafe owners typically pull chairs toward the wall and advise patrons to move as the train approaches for safety

✅ Why Visit Train Street?

  • A surreal photo moment: watching a train zoom past just steps from your feet.

  • Authentic cultural vibe: locals sip tea or play cards between train schedules, showcasing daily life intertwined with the tracks
